The Sift Dimension

The Sift is the new dimension at the heart of Minecraft Dungeons II, reached through rifts that appear across the Overworld. It is a glowing world of ancient stone and lush vegetation saturated with soul energy, home to the Blub, the Twisted Warden and biomes including the Meadow and The Carapace. Project Spicewood was the game's codename, not the dimension.

The Sift is the reason the sequel exists. As Mojang tells it, the team realized Minecraft had not added a new dimension in over ten years, and Dungeons II would be the one to change that. Mysterious portals, called rifts, appear across the Overworld; step through one and you reach a dimension that is nothing like the Deep Dark or the Nether: bright, alive and saturated with soul energy.

What The Sift looks like

The first area you reach after entering a rift is the Meadow: lush, green and deliberately built in a palette Minecraft rarely uses, so the arrival lands as a visual reset. Deeper into the dimension the environments turn, and the named example is The Carapace, a desert-like region filled with massive skeletal structures, which the design director called her favorite biome on the launch stream.

The rules of the place

The Sift runs on soul energy, and that is mechanical, not just lore. Its glowing liquid pools damage you twice at once, draining health and soul energy together, which makes the resource you spend on abilities a thing the terrain can steal. The dimension's creatures are built around that economy: the Blub, a round ambient creature, happily soaks in the liquid that hurts you, because the developers describe it as the creature's home. The people chasing the corruption back home are covered in the character guide.

The Twisted Warden

The dimension's signature threat is the Twisted Warden, a Warden corrupted by the same soul power that saturates The Sift, guarding the Deep Dark portal. The community's reading, that it wanders where stray souls gather, is explicitly speculation; Mojang demonstrated the fight but has not canonized the backstory. The boss fight itself.

So what is Project Spicewood?

A different thing entirely, and the source of constant search confusion. Spicewood was the codename for the game, not the dimension: the project leaked under that name in March 2025, and Mojang revealed the real title, Minecraft Dungeons II, in March 2026. The official minecraft.net asset paths still use spicewood in their URLs, which keeps the name circulating. Nothing in-game is called Spicewood.

FAQ

Is The Sift endgame-only?

No. Reaching The Sift is part of the story: an achievement marks entering the new dimension as a main-quest milestone, and the story's climax involves saving both the Overworld and The Sift together.

Is The Sift in regular Minecraft?

No. It exists in Minecraft Dungeons II. Whether the dimension ever crosses into the main game has not been announced.

Are there more dimensions beyond The Sift?

Nothing announced. The DLC plans describe new locations without naming additional dimensions. What the DLC says.
